Sony Vaio laptop (2012 model, SVS13A15CE to be precise).Outlook 2013 (installed using Click to run, using Office 365 University).I thought I'd share both to try to find out if there's a fix but also to point out some useful troubleshooting steps I've taken. However, I now have a rather odd situation I've always found the indexed search in Outlook a bit temperamental (well at least since Outlook 2010), but usually an index rebuild fixes things. I've really struggled recently with Instant Search in Outlook 2013.
